Hongkong, 17th April, 1890.

I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that news having reached this Colony on the 13th instant of the death of the Marquis Tseng at Peking, I telegraphed the following morning (in the terms quoted below) expressing the sincere regret evoked by the sad event among all classes in Hongkong:-

"Chrysalis Hongkong galleons persist cranefly inversely Tseng". (community at Hong Kong has heard with great regret the news of the death of the Marquis)

I shall be glad if Your Excellency will convey to the Prince and Ministers of the Tsungli Yamen the expression of sympathy on the part of this Government for the national loss which China has sustained.
